Today we’ll discuss essence, a type of serum, and vitamin C and why they’re such an important part of your skin care regimen. We’ll look at each product to see what they are and what the benefits are for us, especially as we age. We’ll see why the best skin care over 50 is incomplete without these two vital products. I was a little lost when I started getting serious about my skin, so I hope this helps you in your search to make changes in your skin care routine. I’ll share what I’ve learned and have been doing for the past nine months without fail.
What is Essence?
An essence, like a serum, is designed to get deeper into the skin. Essence comes to us from Korea. If you’ve done any type research or reading on Korean skin care you know how seriously they take it. The routines you’ll find for Korean skin care are at least 10 steps. Boy, that seems like a lot when you’re tired and ready for bed. But…the Korean women sure have beautiful skin. Hum…maybe I’ll do a post on it one day. Here in the West we call them serum, but they’re basically the same except essence is usually a little thinner.
When applying products to your face you’ll want to start with the lighter product and work up to the thickest, richest product (that would be your moisturizer). Essence is the first skin care product to use after washing your face. On the nights you exfoliate you’ll want to do this between washing and applying essence. Your essence can be applied in both your am and pm routines. They come in different consistencies, but tend to lean more towards the thicker side. The thinner ones can be applied using a spray bottle. The one I use comes in a pump bottle that I apply to my fingers and rub into my face.
The Benefits of Essence
The benefits of essence include fighting to repair fine lines and wrinkles. It also works to correct uneven skin tones and to erase dullness. Using an essence helps to add hydration to dry skin. These are all issues that increase with age, so that’s why this is an important step in skin care over 50.
What is Vitamin C?
You might be thinking about oranges about now. Isn’t vitamin C a part of our daily supplement intake? Isn’t that what prevents scurvy? I keep chew tablets in my cabinet so I can start taking them at the first signs of a cold. This is probably what most of us think about and they are important to our health.
Are you thinking that I’m crazy about now to be advising you to add vitamin C to your skin care regimen? What if I tell you that vitamin C is also essential in repairing tissue? Starting to make sense? As with the essence, this step can be applied in both your am and pm routines and follows your essence. Most of the vitamin C products for the face are categorized as a serum, but that’s okay…don’t let that deter you from using both the essence and this product. As I stated in my previous post, those of you with sensitive skin may want to test a small area on your face with vitamin C when spending time in the sun as it can actually aid in burning your skin. The skin on my face isn’t as sensitive as the rest of my body, but I avoid using vitamin C when I know I’ll be in the sun for an extended time…especially at the beach…because I am fair complected and burn easily anyway. Why take chances, huh? Now let’s look at the benefits of vitamin C on our largest organ…our skin.
The Benefits of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is also known to protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays that are damaging to our skin. It improves the appearance of skin by reducing the dark spots caused by damage from the sun. It also helps fight wrinkles, hydrate, and firms our skin because of its ability to increase the production of collagen.
The Products I Use
So…here’s where I get to share with you the products I use. For essence I use the Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence by Cosrx. It’s light and goes on easily. One of the best things is that it is very inexpensive. Some other essences can be pretty expensive, so I consider this a very wise choice. The vitamin C that I use is the Vitamin C 20 with Vitamin E & Hyaluronic Acid by TruSkin. This product is also very inexpensive. I have ordered these products more than once because I’m very happy with the way they feel and work with my other skin care products.
Let’s Put it All Together
I hope this information has been enlightening and has you thinking about the best skin care over 50. To sum it up…there are specific benefits to each of the products we use and there is a particular order for applying these products. The order is:
- Exfoliant (once a week at night)
- Vitamin C
- Eye Cream
I discussed the cleanser, moisturizers, and eye cream I use in my previous post (see The Basics Matter). Please have a look at this post if you haven’t done so already. I think you’ll find that it has some beneficial information. This routine and these products have made such a big difference in improving the appearance of my skin. I highly recommend you give them a try.
If you have a question just leave it in the comments and I’ll get back with you. I always welcome your comments too.
Here’s hoping for younger looking skin!
